"Give me six hours to chop down the tree and I will spend the first hour sharpening the axe." - Abraham Lincoln
While it's true that Abe often wielded his axe when he was younger, the 16th President of the United States might have been referring to something more than just chopping wood.
Specifically, Lincoln points out the importance of planning in any endeavor – whether it's something as daunting as reuniting a divided nation, or something as simple as chopping down a tree to build a house.
This maxim still applies in our modern age, especially when people are putting a premium on entrepreneurship – being their own boss – than employment. Thinking of running a successful business sure feels good, much like thinking of chopping down a tree, but if you just dive in without "sharpening your axe" – or alloting sufficient time for preparation and planning – you're bound to make things harder for yourself.
This is where Lincoln's words has a powerful effect. Planning, when done right, can spell the difference between a profitable business and a struggling one.
