South African state energy provider Eskom has in recent times been the subject of intense criticism after senior staff members were accused of corruption at the end of the previous government. Since then, the organisation has been in dire need of renovation and reorganisation to recover from the mismanagement and neglect of the previous leaders.
Earlier this year, Eskom was forced to introduce a load shedding schedule, meaning for up to four hours at a time, entire neighbourhoods were without power over the course of several days.
During this time, many citizens turned to personal solar power systems to try and avoid dependence on the grid. However, personal solar panels produce less energy a day than the average South African uses, meaning this system isn’t likely to cure or even significantly affect the issues Eskom is suffering under and something else needs to be done to help keep South Africa powered up.
